On July 1, 2025, a webinar organized by NATA called "PBM and Patient Safety" was held, dedicated to the role of patient blood management (PBM) as an important strategy for patient safety. NATA (Network for Advancement of Patient Blood Management, Hemostasis and Thrombosis) is an international organization dedicated to promoting best practices in patient blood management, hemostasis and thrombosis.

The webinar was moderated by dr. sc. Tina Tomić Mahečić, the first president of CroPBM and a new member of the Board of Directors of NATA. Prof. participated in the discussion. Benedikt Preckel from UMC Amsterdam, chairman of the ESAIC Safety and Quality Committee, and dr. Dora Karmelić, CroPBM member and ESAIC ambassador for patient safety from Croatia.

The occasion for the organization of this event was the new Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety 2.0, which as one of the key requirements emphasizes the need for every institution that provides anesthesia services to have a developed PBM protocol. You can read the declaration itself at the following link: https://helsinkipatientsafety.org/

Participants emphasized that PBM is not only a clinical tool, but also a key component of patient safety. The webinar highlighted the positive effects of PBM on treatment outcomes and the rational use of health resources, as well as possible risks in case of improper application. At the same time, the importance of a team approach, tailored to the patient, was emphasized in order to successfully implement PBM in daily clinical practice.
